Types of String for Jewelry Making

Nylon

Nylon is a highly versatile option that is practical for many different jewelry designs. It is a reliable option in woven bracelets and a useful choice for most general string related situations. Nylon string is split into several different categories. One of the popular types is the Chinese knotting cord which is a type of braided nylon. This nylon is very strong and easily able to maintain its shape. Also, the KO beading thread is abrasion resistant, strong and easy to secure the ends tightly.

Cotton

Cotton cord is a useful option for projects that can benefit from a distinctive look. This type of string material is created by combining several woven threads and applying a coating of wax to help minimize issues with fraying. It is great for stringing beads with a threaded hole in the region of 1 to 2 mm in thickness. Once the coating of wax is applied, the string is very clean and durable.

Elastic

Elastic cord is a useful option for making jewelry that needs a certain degree of flexibility, such as the stretchy bracelets. The elastic nature of this string makes the jewelry very easy to remove. Once the jewelry beads are placed on the elastic, it is relatively easy to secure using a basic surgeon’s knot or similar. Also, for extra strength, the knot can easily be finished with a few drops of elastic friendly glue.

Polyethylene fiber

The use of polyethylene fiber is the right choice for pieces of jewelry that need a lot of strength. This material has the ability to give great all-round strength and is very easy to tie at the end of a project. It is a practical option for holding beads that aren’t smooth.

Polyester cord

Polyester cord is a very strong and easy to use option for the macramé and shamballa jewelry designs. It is a useful choice when working with beads that have a large thread hole. The string is very dependable and will not lose its shape or shrink when it comes into contact with moisture.

Benefits of Custom-Made Jewelry

Designed from scratch

A major benefit of the custom-made jewelry is that every piece created will be entirely unique. This type of jewelry is completely designed from scratch with the intention to create something that is one of a kind and able stand out from the more traditional designs.

For the fussy wearer of jewelry, this will give a perfect opportunity to give their input to ensure the finished piece is able to fully match their personality. There is plenty to think about in the process of creating the perfect piece of jewelry. Also, the things to consider will vary with the different types of jewelry. For instance, the basic shape of the item is likely to range from rectangular or round for a pendant, while a set of earrings can have a drop or button style.

A further consideration is the specific metal for the custom-made jewelry. The most popular options include titanium, sterling silver, gold and platinum. The preferred metal style is relatively easy to choose because most people have a particular preference for the basic metal color and look.

Additionally, there is the option to choose the type, color, number and size of the gemstones.

Typically, it will benefit to have a rough idea of the preferred style or look of the piece of jewelry before making a visit to the store to make it easier to explain what is needed.

Create an heirloom

Jewelry that is well-crafted and personally designed has the potential to become a much-loved heirloom that can be passed from family member to family member. However, it is essential to have the jewelry piece made to a high standard. For instance, rings with a single or multiple gemstones will need to have them protected and set well to last for the long-term.

Reuse old jewelry

Rather than starting entirely from scratch, there is the option to reuse the gemstones and metal from out old heirloom piece. Many items of jewelry can start to look old-fashioned, but still have the high-quality gemstones or diamonds. They can be reused to create something that is a little more up to date.

Origin of Diamond Watches

When wrist watches and diamond jewelry began to become extremely popular around the early part of the 20th century, it was only a matter of time before the two would be fused together to create diamond watches.

Some of the most historical watch brands ever to grace the world of diamond jewelry include the likes of Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Breitling. These proud companies call to mind the golden age of Swiss diamond watch making. Each of these three iconic watch makers has its own unique story to offer up to the history of diamond jewelry.

Each one of these respected timepiece manufacturers were established at the Chaud du Fonds in Switzerland in the 19th century – the center of the watch making world at the time. But it wasn’t until the age of World War One that wrist watches began to become extremely popular, before this they had strictly been a woman’s fashion accessory.

Wrist watches were the only practical timepieces during the trench warfare of the Great War. For this reason, teamed with the technological advances of the time, wristwatches were a runaway success in the period following the First World War. It wasn’t long before the Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Breitling brands were moving into the high-end diamond jewelry market to create their first lines of diamond encrusted luxury watches.

Cartier even has a line of luxury watches called the Tank Series that came out in 1917 having been inspired by the battle tanks that were then roaming the battlefields of Europe. Now in 2010, Cartier still produces a line of descendants from this famous watch, characterized by their square bezels and elegant yet sturdy appearance.

Today, designer companies like these sit at the pinnacle of the diamond jewelry industry. They are however being challenged by many newcomers to the business whose diamond timepieces are being endorsed by big celebrities and have gathered a dedicated following over a short period of time.

Clean Diamond Jewelry at Home

  • Step 1. Fill a tiny bucket or glass with hot water. This water should be lukewarm rather than too hot for the hands to touch. Never use the kitchen sink basin with an obstructed drain for this purpose because you do not want your cherished property to be lost down the drain.
  • Step 2. Pour some detergent into the warm water and mix well. You merely need to employ a really small amount of detergent to make the solution slightly soapy.
  • Step 3. Place your diamonds in the soapy water to soak for around 10 minutes. This gives sufficient time for just about any built-up grime to break down and allows for easy removal.
  • Step 4. Fill another bucket with hot water and add a tiny amount of ammonia-based glass cleaner solution. NEVER use chlorine based cleaners because they could chemically react with some metals in the earrings.
  • Step 5. After 10 minutes in the detergent bathtub, remove your earrings and stick them in the next pot which you prepared with the glass cleaner.
  • Step 6. Take away the earrings from the cleaner solution and begin cleaning it with a brush with soft bristles. Clean all edges of the diamonds by brushing lightly with the soft brush. Since mud normally accumulates at the ends and the trunk of the band, you might like to give these areas an exceptionally good scrub. If the earrings have a prong-based kind of setting, take care not to clean vigorously as the bristles get stuck in some of the prongs and can loosen the stone when you apply increased force.
  • Step 7. After cleaning, place the precious stone rings back to the pot containing water and detergent. Clean the jewelry while it is submerged in the solution to wash off of the loosened dirt.
  • Step 8. Now, use clean water to rinse out the jewelry. If you are rinsing from the kitchen sink basin, be sure you put in a strainer to the drain to avoid dropping your earrings by accident.
  • Step 9. Completely dry the jewelry with a bit of nylon or other soft material and blow dried with a hair drier if necessary. Be careful not to let the water evaporate from the diamond jewelry by itself as it could leave water discolorations on the gem.
  • Step 10. Execute a quick routine check up on your jewelry for possible destruction like the loosening of prongs. This will help you find any problems sooner and get them fixed avoiding the risk of losing the gem.

Additional Ideas to Keep Your GEMSTONE Sparkling Clean

Dirt collected among the prongs may be hard to eliminate even after soaking with detergent and cleaning. If so, you may use a toothpick to eliminate tenacious grim but always exercise extreme care.

Usually, we would advise you against using any bleaching chemicals and other abrasive chemicals on your precious stone jewelry. It could corrode the material of the diamond ring and eliminate the sparkling ring’s finish.

Be mindful when inserting your earrings in extremely hot water particularly if you have charms with merged gemstones. Some gemstones with inclusions at fragile places can shatter when experiencing an abrupt temperature spike. Moreover, diamonds that have undergone clarity improvements may require special cleaning procedures to preserve their integrity.

If the ring still does not sparkle like new, we advise you to consider professional cleaning services. They have particular equipment like vapor cleaners and special machines which can remove stubborn gunk in a jiffy. In addition, these cleaning services are usually performed free-of-charge and can be carried out at the same time you take your jewelry for fixes or the regular checkups.

You can find special machines like ultrasonic cleaners which you are able to purchase for home use. When the device is turned on, the ultrasonic vibrations made will dislodge dirt and grime debris effectively from the diamond’s surface. These cleaners usually feature a metal cup so that you can place your earrings in and also have various settings of function for different earrings types.

Buy a High Quality Diamond

If you head into a purchase with no knowledge of diamonds, you could pay a lot more than you need to. It’s well worth taking the time to educate yourself a little, as this will make it more likely that you will get the best diamond at the best possible price.

Having knowledge means having a confident air about you when you do business with a seller. If you start the conversation by asking about the weight and the 4 C’s, the seller will automatically assume that you know more about diamonds than the average buyer, making them less likely to try and sell you something of a lesser quality at a higher price.

The first thing to consider is the Cut, which has nothing to do with the shape of the diamond. Terms such as pear, round, and princess refer to the shape of the diamond, while the cut is more about how the angles and finish reflect the light and make the gem sparkle.

Listed below are the basic rules of cut selection:

  • The finest diamonds have what is referred to as an Ideal Cut, which means they will be particularly brilliant. This cut is only found on round diamonds.
  • Premium Cut diamonds are also round, and while they are still a high-quality gem, they usually cost less for a seller to acquire than the Ideal Cut stones.
  • Larger diamonds that reflect light well and which offer up a good deal of brilliance are known as Very Good diamonds. They cost less than the cuts discussed above.
  • When a diamond cutter creates a larger stone as opposed to creating one in the premium category, you are usually left with a Good Cut. You still get a quality diamond here, albeit at a more affordable price.
  • Fair and Poor Cut diamonds do not offer much in the way of brilliance and are usually cut to make a larger stone.

The next C that we need to talk about is Clarity.

As the word suggests, the clarity is all about how clear the diamond is and whether it has any internal flaws that might affect its brilliance. Flaws are never referred to as blemishes, but rather inclusions. A diamond with great clarity will sell at a high price.

You may hear a seller talk about ratings for inclusion not visible to the naked eye. These flaws are graded from F to SI, with the meaning of each grade listed below:

F – Flawless and extremely rare.

IF – Another rare type of diamond, this one will have surface flaws but no internal issues.

VVS1-VVS2- Very few inclusions will be found on these diamonds, with all flaws detected at 10X magnification by a diamond pro.

VS1-VS2 – Very similar to the previous grade, with minor inclusions found at 10X magnification.

SI1-SI2 – Very slightly included, although the flaws are easier to detect at 10X magnification.

I1-I2-I3 – These diamonds come with inclusions visible to the naked eye, and as such are not considered a good investment.

The next thing to discuss is the diamond Color, which actually has more to do with a lack of it as opposed to a lot of color. Diamonds that are colorless tend to refract more light and deliver a great sparkle. The more color a diamond has, the less light it will absorb. Colorless diamonds are a very rare find indeed.

Don’t be fooled by sellers who refer to a diamond as blue-white. What they are talking about here is fluorescence, which gives a diamond a milky appearance when exposed to sunlight, thus reducing its value. Sellers will try to make a diamond seem more sparkly by using lighting tricks, so always ask to see the stone in natural light.

There are some blues, yellows, and other colors of diamonds available, all of which are very rare and extremely valuable.

Jewelers use what is known as a GIA scale to rate all diamonds. D is the highest on the scale, which runs all the way to Z, which is the poorest quality.

When we talk about Carat, we talk about the weight of the diamond, with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. It goes without saying that larger diamonds are more expensive, especially since large diamonds are very rarely discovered. It’s worth noting that one large diamond has a greater value than 5 smaller ones which add up to the same weight. When buying a ring with a center stone surrounded by smaller diamonds, only ask about the weight of the diamond in the middle.

Before you hand over your money, be sure to ask for a grading report or diamond certificate put together by a professional gemologist. This report will include everything that you need to know about the stone, which will help prove the quality of your purchase.

What to Look for When Buying Pearls

Check to see if the pearl has been artificially coloured

This isn’t, in itself, necessarily a problem. Typically though, purists will look for naturally coloured pearls and they might well command higher prices.

Things that might indicate the pearl has been artificially coloured include:

  • colour seemingly “wearing off” the outer shell;
  • a very dark core (indication of possible irradiation to change colours);
  • a very visible stratification of colour change on the inside of the pearl.

The final two above assume your pearl has a drill hole that you can look into with magnification.

Examine the regularity and symmetry of shape

Tiny irregularities of shape can be seen or felt – and that’s typically a good sign!

If your pearl is perfectly round and perfectly smooth over its surface, then you’re probably looking at an artificial not natural (whether wild or cultured) pearl made from synthetic materials.

However, even if you have a real pearl, remember that significant deformations and irregularities may (or should) reduce the value if they’re particularly evident or severe.

Look at the lustre

Peals may vary in both body colour (their background colour) and their overtones (a surface shimmer of colour). Some may not have an overtone and that is not a problem. A lot will depend upon your own colour preferences.

However, this is very difficult to describe but look for pearls that gently shine. If they’re a dull matt finish it might indicate that there has been some damage (e.g. poor cleaning techniques with acid) that has taken the lustre off.

That can hugely reduce both value and appearance.

Read the advertisement’s wording carefully

Terms used in some pearl advertisements which may mislead (intentionally or otherwise):

Pearls from Japan“. That phrase would be true for pearls farmed in say China, shipped to Japan and then sold-on from there. Look for “farmed in Japan” to be sure – if that’s what you’re looking for;

Certified“. By whom? To what recognised standards? Remember, a label attached to your pearls means nothing if it’s just the seller’s.

Real pearls“. That should exclude synthetics but it’s ambiguous in terms of whether your pearls are natural (i.e. found in the wild – which is VERY rare today and they’re very expensive too) or cultured.

AAAA Grade“. Gradings are not standard across the globe or universally recognised. Trust some of the other tips on this page and your own common sense.

Price

Typically, if all other things are roughly equal, from most to least expensive pearls run:

  • natural/wild (sea);
  • cultured (sea);
  • freshwater;
  • synthetics.

If you see cultured pearls advertised at a price close to a set of essentially plastic ones, then something’s gone wrong and you should be sceptical.

Protect Yourself From Buying The Fake Gemstones

Manik

If you want to Buy Manik Stone then you must know about the 4 C’s of it. Buy Manik Stone which is opaque or translucent. Some ruby ratna are transparent too but they are very rare. Manik ratna has many inclusions like cracks, milky effect etc. that makes it less clear. Clean Ruby ratna are very rare and are very expensive. To Buy Ruby Stone, check for different types of cut of Ruby (Ruby) as per your choice such as Marquise, Octagon, Oval, Pear, Heart, Round and Square. Colour Shades of the Manik ratna ranges between light pink to deep pigeon blood red. The deep pigeon blood red Manik Stones costs you much as compare to light pink color. The tints of blue, yellow and black mark their presence also in Ruby Stone that lowers its price. Burmese Ruby is transparent and has bright red color that makes it costlier than other Ruby. To Buy Manik Stone, try to procure the Burmese Ruby. More is the carat finer is the quality but they are rare. So their prices vary. Buy Manik stone of above 3-4 carats to get the best quality Manik Stone.

Diamonds

The factors that affected by the cut of a diamond are its brilliance, dispersion of lights and scintillation or sparkling effect. A small and well cut diamond fetches higher price for it. Buy Diamonds that are available in variety of colors like pinks, blues and yellow and fetch more value as they are rare. However, white and transparent diamond gives you the true color thus have greater value. Buy Diamonds has many inclusions as they are procured from deep earth. More the inclusions more are the flaws. To Buy Diamonds, make sure that the inclusions are under facets or near the girdle because they are hard to see. The cost of the Diamonds depend on the cut, colour, clarity and carat, but sometimes the equal carat weight diamonds have different cost, majorly depends on cut, color and clarity. So, to Buy Diamonds you have to check the 4C’s very carefully.

Fluid Fashion of Ladies Watches

Current Ladies Watch Fashion

Currently, fine watches designed for women are always updated with the introduction of new models and styles. Often, annual styles and designs are introduced, making it nearly impossible for any fashionable woman to limit herself to just basic timepieces. However, building a basic collection is important. To do that, you will need to cover all wristwatch categories: dress, jewelry, and sports. One brand can carry all that fall under each of the listed categories; however, you can build a more interesting collection by choosing from collections of many watchmakers.

Sporty Timepieces

Sports timepieces were created to suit the needs of the active woman. It doesn’t matter what your physical activity of choice is-it can be as extreme as rock climbing or ocean diving, or it could be fairly conventional, like running or Pilates. You need a high-performing timepiece that works both in and out of the water, and has a chronograph, alarm or stopwatch. This is also why sports models are made with durable parts of leather, rubber, steel, and even titanium. These great timekeepers have smaller parts and thinner straps compared to their male counterparts’. Pastel-colored models match fair complexion nicely and darker skin will better match straps and faces that are either neutrally-colored, or have extremely bright colors.

Dress Watches

Timepieces used for dressy occasions are the second category to consider. Dress watches are staples for any woman. Traditionally, this style of watch often meant a classic design and in white gold or yellow; needless to say, they were the epitome of elegance. These days, the characteristics of this style is much more lax. A timepiece with no Velcro, rubber straps, over-sized parts, or even huge markings qualifies and these styles can allow transitioning smoothly from formal events to more casual occasions.

Bejeweled Watches

Jewelry timepieces are those that took long periods of craftsmanship to be created and put together. Often, these fine pieces are embellished with stones and precious gems that were selected and matched accordingly, based on color, clarity, and even perfection, before being set into the watch.
